This past weekend we started the new masters swim season off well with an excellent meet at Foothills pool. We had just over 20 swimmers attend and really brought the excitement up a bit with our cheering. I was pleased with all the swimming but here were a few standouts.
Sarah Van Peteghen swam four swims and was way under her best times in all of them with the best coming in the 100 Free at 1:20. Michelle Wortley raced all of her swims very well but her 32.6 in her 50 Free was her top performance. Francie Hannigan had a two strong breaststroke races with a 1:30 and a 41 but technically was leaps a bound ahead of everyone there and there is a lot of potential to swim even faster.
The standouts on the men’s side were Simon Garside who swam five events really well and more then his fair share of relay legs. I am pretty sure he is still recovering but his 50 Back was his top swim at 32.9. Simon managed to wrest Keith Shaw’s Alberta 50 Breast record away from him, although Keith managed a new Alberta record of his own in the 200 Breast. Mike Hogan also had five swims under his belt but his top one was 50 Fly as he came charging home in a 32.9. Kyle Murphy had two strong Freestyle races with a 25.7 in the 50 and 56.8 in the 100.
The team really stepped up for the relays at the end as we had four mixed teams in the 4×50 Free and Medley as well as a womans Medley relay in the middle of the meet and it really capped off all the excellent performances. I hope we see the same strong swimming at our meet in a few weeks.
